About the St. Joseph Liturgical Ministries
The Liturgy Committee is a group of parishioners who gather once each month to make sure that the "human resources" needs of each Church service are fulfilled.
The Committee coordinates the ministries that function during masses and special services such as penance services, feast day celebrations, Eucharistic adoration and missions. The Committee also oversees the selection, training and scheduling of Sacristans, Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers.
The Liturgical Ministries include:
- Altar Servers
- Extraordinary Ministers
- Gift Bearers
- Lectors
- Sacristans
- Music and Art
What Do These Ministers Do?
Sacristans help the priest prepare for Mass. Their tasks also include cleaning the articles used during the liturgy and returning them to the proper place in the Sacristy.
Altar Servers assist the priests and deacons as the mystery of the Upper Room and Calvary becomes present again at the Consecration. It is an extreme privilege to kneel so close to the altar as our loving Savior becomes truly present, body, blood, soul and divinity, at the moment of Consecration.
Lectors assist at each Mass by reading the Word of God to the congregation. But the role of Lector requires more than simply reading from the book. It is a unique ministry that calls each minister to be grounded in prayer and in faith; to be willing to grow through study; and to proclaim God's word with a conviction founded upon faith.
Gift Bearers are chosen from among the faithful to represent the entire congregation at Mass by presenting the gifts of bread and wine during the Offertory. Volunteering to present the gifts at Mass is a great way to honor God in thanksgiving for anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist assist the priest with distribution of Communion at Mass, and by carrying the Holy Eucharist to parishioners who are home bound, hospitalized or in nursing homes. Each Extraordinary Minister is nominated by the pastor, then carefully trained to fulfill this important mission.
